What is the R-410A phase-out and the change to A2L refrigerants?
The refrigerant used in most AC systems, R-410A, has a high global warming potential (GWP), which means it traps heat in the atmosphere if released. As of January 2025, the federal government began transitioning to a more eco-friendly refrigerant, A2L. Your current R-410A system is still safe and legal to own, operate, and service. Over time, parts and refrigerant for R-410A systems will become more expensive and harder to find as production winds down. New equipment after 2025 will be designed for A2L refrigerants, so if you’re considering replacing or upgrading your system, it’s worth discussing your options now.
